Alright, I´m in Hidden Valley Lake drinking coffee. (Well, I´m not IN the lake ofcourse, but I can see it from where I´m sitting....) I´ll get in the car in about an hour and drive to Petaluma, CA which is just north of San Francisco. I did a concert in Grass Valley on Friday and one in Kelseyville near Clear Lake yesterday afternoon. Since I´m presenting Norwegian music AFTER Grieg this time, I´ve been kinda curious about the reactions from the audience. A lot of new stuff in one concert, and it is, after all, a bit more challenging to the ear than Grieg´s Lyric Pieces. But the outcome has been extremely positive. I do think, however, that´s it´s very important that I present the pieces and the historical surroundings verbally. This way the audience will understand what the music is all about. This will also contribute to make the so-called classical music less "dangerous." They will realize that it´s not some kind of lofty, abstract thing coming from the composers egos (although alot of classical music is infact about that ofcourse...), but instead that the music has historical value and importance. It´s even more so in this case since the music has roots in some sort of Norwegian nationalism. Nobody has yet heard about Geirr Tveitt for instance. But the audience is totally present and they enjoy it very much. About time that people outside Norway, and even the people in Norway, realize that we have lots of good music also outside of Grieg and outside of the romantic period.
I´ve been staying at people´s homes so far in very nice houses and with very nice hosts. But I will stay at a hotel in Petaluma for the first time of this tour. On a tour of this length, variation is always a good thing. It´s always nice to talk to people and get to know them. But sometimes it´s wonderful to just be alone in a hotel room, kick back and relax without relating to anything but your own mind. This hotel also has a fitness centre. It strikes me that I should probably use it... It´s a long tour after all, and it´s quite challenging to play all those concerts. And ofcourse, there´s a lot of temptations here (you know, this is America where they have muffins, chocolate donutes or toast for breakfast. And I just have to make this point.. Americans aren´t fat because of fat. They´re fat because of the sugar industry (ofcourse combined with all the calories)). But anyway, if I can work out to satisfy my body and my conscience, I can allow myself to fall for more of these temptations! ;-)
I´ll be back with more thoughts and reports later. I can´t say exactly how often. That depends on my time and the internet availability.
Max and Siri enjoy every word you write. Awaiting the third chapter!
